The Dangers and Benefits of Sun Exposure

The summer months are upon us. We all love the beach. Everyone loves the surf, the sandcastles, the boardwalk, and of course, everyone loves a nice tan. And most of us know people who will go out and actually lie on the beach all day long trying to get the perfect tan. Maybe some of you do it yourselves!

Well, we also all know about skin cancer. It’s the big C and it is one of those things that really is not good and something that in some cases, we actually do have limited control over. Skin cancer is one of the diseases that we can actually do something about. Now, of course I don’t mean it like that. I mean that we can decrease our risk.

Now, I want to preface that I am not a doctor, I am just basing this article on other articles I have read. Now we all know that excess sun exposure and sun burns can really do harm to our skin and increase our risk for cancer.

So does this mean we should avoid the sun at all costs? Absolutely not! It is amazing how everyone refers to the “sun’s deadly rays”. Look, too much exposure is not good. But can it really be beneficial to just sit inside all day, or in our office all day? No. The sun, in small doses is actually very beneficial to us.

A few facts: research has shown that people farther away from the equator, have a higher risk of developing cancer. Now why would this be? Well those living closer to the equator have more exposure to the sun year round. The sun in controlled amounts actually increases the development of Vitamin D. People living near the equator have higher levels of Vitamin D which actually players a much more important role in the body than people realize. They have an effect on weight loss and blood sugar levels among others.

Additional research has shown that small amounts of sun exposure actually improve mood, help depression, increase healthful Vitamin D levels and has many other benefits also. So basically what I am saying is to be careful when going out in the sun and when not going out in the sun. While it is absolutely true that high levels of sun exposure cause damage, it is also true that underexposure to the sun causes damage.

Get some sun exposure and don’t over tan. The sun is good, and your health is important so make sure to take the right steps to keep it that way!
