Cheddar cheese fondue is too thick?

I made a simple cheese fondue the other night and it’s a bit too thick. Not so much that you can’t dip bread into it, but I would like it to be a bit more liquid. Any suggestions?
I used beer instead of milk when I made it – would adding more beer have the same effect?
